Number of Members: 9

Leader: Rosemary Broadey

Map Ref: OL22 / SU 243 086 (Bolderwood & Blackwater Arboretum)

Weather: Overcast, mild.

Itinerary:
A circuit of the deer sanctuary, lunch at Bolderwood Picnic Site, short drive to Blackwater, followed by a walk around the Arboretum.

Total number of species seen was 18, as detailed below:

Woodpigeon Goldcrest Magpie
Wren Long-tailed Tit Carrion Crow
Robin Coal Tit Chaffinch
Blackbird Great Tit Greenfinch
Song Thrush Treecreeper Common Crossbill
Mistle Thrush Jay Hawfinch

Notes:
The day began very well with extended views of several Treecreepers on holly and oak trunks. At the end of the day we saw a good number of Hawfinches. The birds congregate at the top of 60 foot conifers before diving deep into the trees to roost. There were a maximum of eight birds simultaneously in view. Thanks to Stuart Grant who kindly shared his telescope to give us all a 'close-up' view. A confiding Robin shared a bench with Tricia Farrington, perched on the telescope and then enjoyed biscuit crumbs from Mary Tiler's picnic box.
