Number of Members & Visitors: 10

Leader: Rosemary Broadey

Map Ref: OL22 / SU 268 079 (Millyford Bridge)

Weather: Cloudy, rather cool.

Itinerary & Notes:
The RSPB's Bird of Prey nestcam at the Reptile Centre is focused on a Goshawk nest. Three eggs are expected to hatch this weekend. Both highlights from previous seasons, and live pictures, could be viewed.

Bird feeders attracted a flock of Siskin, also several species of finch and tit. A robin's nest holding five eggs was discovered behind the loose bark of a tree. We saw examples of all the reptiles in captivity, despite the cool conditions.

During our walk from Millyford Bridge we found beetles in dead wood and tadpoles in a pond. Wild flowers including pink Marsh Lousewort were admired.

Several Great Spotted Woodpeckers were observed, all on or near to the ground. Wood Warblers were heard and seen; a Cuckoo called. Nuthatches bathed in a forest stream.

Total number of species seen was 27, as detailed below:

Goshawk (via the nestcam) Song Thrush Treecreeper
Woodpigeon Mistle Thrush Jay
Cuckoo (heard) Wood Warbler Magpie
Swift Goldcrest Jackdaw
Great Spotted Woodpecker Willow Tit Carrion Crow
